Handmade Baby Blocks and Onsies.

This was a project I completed over a month ago. In my rush to complete them before we left for our anniversary trip I remembered to take a few photos. Good thing I finished them too, because my nephew was born a few days later :) I enjoyed working on these simple projects, and had fun playing around with the bright fabrics.
For the onsie appliques I ironed my fabric onto some interfacing and then cut out my design. I then ironed on the applique to the onsie and finally stitched around the edges to secure. There are quite a few tutorials online so I didn't worry about typing up another one.

Now these blocks below took a little more time, but were still pretty easy to make. I used the following tutorial from Happy Together to make them.

It felt good to get back into my sewing. I have a few more projects in mind now that things are slowing down again, and schedules are actually in existence.

Tonight I thought about starting a project but I ended up curling up on the couch watching a cheesy hallmark movie while sipping on coffee. Oh and there may have been some pumpkin bread involved as well...

I hope everyone is having a wonderful & cozy weekend too!

Create Week 2: Yo-Yo Table Runner

Week two is complete. Well I truly did finish this project this weekend, but it took me awhile to get around to photographing it. Now I am already halfway through this week and no project started. Umm...I may have to skip a week so that I don't make this new goal one I regret. I will be flexible. Anyway, back to my project...

This was a rather tedious project, but it was easy to do it in pieces throughout the week. I would finish a "yo-yo" in a few minutes while watching tv or something like that. Splitting it up throughout the day made it less monotonous. I think that the end product is fun and colorful for spring. I had my doubts and actually thought about not finishing it, but now I am glad I did. I even got a compliment from Ben, so the fact that he noticed our new table decor must mean it is at least half way decent. (by the way... the mums in the pictures are from Ben)

Overall, it was really easy to make. The actual tutorial came from a sewing calendar I have, but I found the website where it came from as well.

Check it

For the sewers out there...

I happened upon this cute tutorial today to make a child's retro duffel bag at the blog Saltwater Kids. I thought it was too sweet to pass up but at this time I don't really have a child to make it for....

So I thought I'd share it will all of you instead. Click on the image to be brought to the tutorial.

Here is another one for a "bread bag"...

okay enough for now.

Happy Thursday.

DIY Felt Bookmarks

DIY Felt Bookmarks

What you need:
  • different colors of Stiffened felt ( Not the flimsy felt, but the felt that comes pre-stiffened...I found it at a Hobby Lobby at 79 cents a sheet)
  • Thread
  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors
(pretty simple so far, right?)

Step One
trace circles with a small round object

Step Two
cut out circles

Step Three
arrange circles how you want to sew them

Step Four
Choose an interesting stitch

Step Five
start stitching at one end of the first circle

Step six
Before you get to the end of the first circle slip the second circle underneath so that they overlap.

Step Seven
keep stitching over overlap

Step Eight
Add third circle

Step Nine
Add fourth circle and then stop at edge. Make sure you leave the thread long enough at the beginning and end so that you can tie a little knot at each end.

Step Ten
Wala! You are done!

After School Crafting

This afternoon I decided to work on a lil' project while I unwound from the week. I had some leftover cream tulle from wedding projects so i did some braiding, cutting, and stitching until I ended up with the headband. I was pretty pleased with how it came out. I would like to play with some patterned fabrics next time around.

Hope everyone is starting off their weekend in a lovely way!

My first apron

I made my first apron a few weeks ago. I had reached a point where I was frustrated with my lack of time to sew and do other creative things so I simply put everything else away and devoted an evening to making this apron. It felt wonderful. The apron turned out pretty good. I started using a pattern from Amy Butler's In Stitches, but then I kind of did my own thing to it in the end. Here are some of the pics Ben took for me.

Someday..

Someday I will have a room, or at least a corner in a house that will hold me sewing stuff. But for now, my sewing machine and fabric must remain packed away in a closet. I love this room, maybe a little less pink, and no barbie accessories...but you get the idea.

Fabric Bunting

My Project of the Night....

Fabric flags for the wedding cake...or cake stand...not quite sure yet.

The Process: I cut out strips of fabric and then used iron on fusing to fold the fabric in half the long way. Next, I cut out little triangles from the now double-sided fabric strips.

After a little haphazard arranging I simply sewed them all together by continuously running them through the sewing machine. It took me a little while to begin the sewing since I forgot I had broken my needle last time. So after hunting down an extra needle I began connecting the flags. It was really quite an easy project. Next, I want to attempt to put little fabric flags on toothpicks for the cupcakes. I keep telling myself to complete one project a night. By pacing myself I hope to get things done in time, but I know that things will start piling up very soon here.

Alright, I need to clean up the mess I made of the kitchen. Then perhaps some hot chocolate before I head off to bed. I know, who drinks hot chocolate in July? I do.

Fabric things

I have this desire to create all these beautiful things with fabric. I think I have starved myself from sewing projects for too long, and now they are always on my mind. Recently I have been wanting to make fabric rosettes. Here is some of my inspiration...

Thankfully, I have a trip planned downtown with my mom tomorrow where we plan to hit up real fabric stores (and by that I mean not JoAnn Fabrics). I am practically drooling thinking of all the new amy butler fabric among other things. (Ben will roll his eyes when he reads this...he tries to be sympathetic with my love of fabric).

So until then, I must catch up on my sleep so Grand Avenue doesn't get the best of me.
